🏰 Places visited: Belinská Cave, Treetop Walk, Starý Smokovec
The morning began with heavy rain that lingered throughout the entire day. Still, our spirits remained high.
We were especially excited because our team was joined by our friend and journalist, Visnya, whose presence brought a fresh wave of energy and curiosity to our journey.
We set off cycling along the foothills of the majestic High Tatras, surrounded by thick mist and the rhythmic sound of raindrops tapping against our helmets.
After a steady ride, we reached the Belinská Cave, one of Slovakia’s fascinating underground wonders. While the weather outside was gloomy, the intricate formations and hidden beauty within the cave offered a quiet, mysterious contrast.
Unfortunately, the towering Tatra peaks remained hidden behind low-hanging clouds for most of the day. Yet nature had its own way of rewarding our efforts. In Bachledova Valley, we took a short hike up to the famous Treetop Walk – a wooden pathway elevated above the forest that offers panoramic views under clear skies. Despite the wind and rain, walking among the treetops was a surreal experience. The mist drifting between the branches, the scent of wet pine, and the creaking of the wooden structure beneath our feet gave the moment an almost cinematic atmosphere. And yes – we managed to overcome our fear of heights, step by shaky step. After drying off a bit and grabbing some hot tea, we continued our journey through the Belianske Tatras, heading toward Tatranská Lomnica. This charming tourist village, often bustling in peak season, revealed its quieter side in the rain. We explored its hidden corners, admired wooden mountain chalets with carved balconies, and stumbled upon a few cozy cafés where time seemed to slow down.
From there, we cycled further along scenic forest roads to one of the oldest and most historic spa towns in the High Tatras – Starý Smokovec. Here, we tasted the naturally carbonated healing water from the Reiner Spring, a local gem with a history stretching back over a century. The water, rich in minerals, was refreshingly cold – and its sharp, metallic taste was oddly satisfying after a long ride. We also took time to admire the stunning architecture of the old spa buildings, many of which still carry the charm of the Austro-Hungarian era. As we made our way to our accommodation, a powerful storm rolled in. Thunder echoed through the mountains and rain poured in sheets – but we pedaled on, soaked to the bone and chilled to the core.
And yet, when we finally arrived, we were smiling. Soaked, frozen… but truly happy. Some adventures are defined not by sunshine or views, but by the people, the perseverance, and the quiet magic of the road.
