📍 Route: Kremnica → Banská Štiavnica
📏 Distance: 44 km / 1011 m ↗ / 893 m ↘
🏰 Places visited: Sklené Teplice, Banská Štiavnica
We began the final day of our two-week cycling journey in the historic town of Kremnica – a place steeped in the legacy of gold mining.
The morning sun lit up the colorful facades of the town, and as we wandered through its narrow streets, we could almost hear the echoes of miners from centuries past. Kremnica offered us a final taste of Slovakia's rich history and charm before we ventured deeper into the mountains.
Leaving Kremnica behind, we took forest paths that were often rough and unmarked, yet breathtakingly beautiful. The ride brought us through dense woods, quiet clearings, and rolling hills that tested both our endurance and our sense of direction. Eventually, we arrived at Sklené Teplice, a tiny spa village hidden like a secret among the Štiavnica Mountains. Here, we took a moment to rest and rejuvenate, tasting the healing thermal waters that have attracted visitors for centuries. The peaceful atmosphere and warm hospitality reminded us of the simple joys that travel brings.
Our journey continued with yet another climb, followed by a long descent that led us to the crown jewel of Slovak mining heritage: Banská Štiavnica, a town proudly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled among forested hills and ancient mining tunnels, Banská Štiavnica is more than just a town – it’s a living museum of Slovak history, culture, and resilience. We walked its cobbled streets, admired its baroque architecture, and reflected on the generations of miners, scientists, and scholars who once walked the same paths.
This marked the final destination of our cycling tour – a journey that spanned two weeks, nearly 900 kilometers, and countless moments of discovery. From majestic mountain passes and forgotten forest trails to vibrant towns and serene villages, Slovakia revealed itself to us in all its natural and cultural beauty. But beyond the landscapes and landmarks, the most enduring memories came from the people we met along the way. Their kindness, openness, and generosity turned this trip into something truly special. Whether it was a local who pointed us in the right direction, a host who welcomed us with a smile, or a stranger who offered water on a hot day – these small acts of humanity became the true treasures of our adventure. Every single person who joined us – whether for one day or the entire journey – came away enriched, inspired, and grateful.
What started as a cycling trip turned into something much more: a celebration of connection, resilience, and the quiet magic of the Slovak countryside.
