Today was a day to remember. We set out on our bikes to explore the Badacsony wine region, one of Hungary’s most famous areas for vineyards and unique wines. Our route took us from the lakeside all the way up toward the hillside, giving us both breathtaking views and quite the workout.
Along the way, we discovered countless vineyards and wineries, ranging from large, well-known estates to small, authentic family-owned ones. Our goal was to stop at places that felt genuine—and, most importantly, were accessible with bikes. That turned out to be a great approach, as it led us to some real gems.
One highlight was the Varga Winery on Szent György Hill. This charming, four-generation family-owned winery had such an authentic feel. There, we tried an Irsai Olivér sweet wine, which stood out as our favorite of the day. The wine was fresh and fragrant, perfectly reflecting the character of the region.
We also came across the Dobosi Stier Winery, which had its own bike resting point—an absolute gift for us weary cyclists. Not only could we pause and recharge, but we also had the chance to pick our own grapes straight from the vineyard. That hands-on experience made the stop especially memorable.
Of course, the day wasn’t all leisure. The pedaling itself was quite demanding, as a strong wind blew against us almost the entire time. Combined with the tiredness that’s been building up over the past days, it definitely tested our endurance. Still, the excellent biking infrastructure of the Badacsony region made the journey smoother and more enjoyable than it might have been otherwise.
All in all, today gave us a perfect mix of effort, discovery, and reward—an authentic taste of Badacsony both on the bike and in the glass.
