On 21st October 2023, a pleasantly warm and atypical autumn Saturday, we went to Kecskevész Rock in Harghita Madaras, home to the captivating Goats Danger Via Ferrata. The weather was in our favour, as the sunshine highlighted the surroundings with vibrant colours, creating a picturesque backdrop for our safety training in via Ferrata.
The training brought together 12 staff and volunteers who immersed themselves in the intricacies of organizing Via Ferrata events for young people, gaining valuable insights to avoid common mistakes. A significant concern is the tendency to overestimate one's abilities, particularly when opting for excessively challenging ferratas—a frequent pitfall.
The Goats Danger Via Ferrata is divided into two variants, reuniting at the midpoint of the rock wall. After converging into a single route, the left path is graded B/C and showcases a unique cable bridge, often referred to as a "Vietnamese bridge", constructed from just two cables—one at the top and one at the bottom. Similarly, the right route holds a B/C difficulty rating.
We selected this Via Ferrata for our training because of its moderate difficulty level, making it a suitable circuit for events organized for youth.
Another focal point of our event was the correct use of equipment, emphasising steering clear of errors like failing to maintain a proper distance, simultaneous attachment of both carabiners to the next section, or the misuse of Dyneema slings as personal anchors. Additionally, the participants got acquainted with the techniques of utilizing the Prusik knot for ascending and descending along the steel cable, ready to apply these skills when necessary. This comprehensive learning experience aimed to equip the 12 participants with the knowledge needed to ensure safety and effectiveness in organizing such events for young participants.
This local training was organised as part of the project "Operation Hook II", a small-scale partnership project in the field of SPORT in which our club is a partner. The project reunites five organisations Four Links (CZ), Ifjusagi Nomad Klub Nonprofit Kft (HU), Klub 86 (SK), Cje - Clube De Jovens Europeus (PT) and Asociatia Clubul Sportiv ARAO (RO) and aims to enhance safety and accessibility in Via Ferrata, involving more young people to experience this thrilling adventure.
We are excited about introducing more young enthusiasts to via Ferrata for the first time and maintaining a connection with those who have already embraced its thrill. If you're keen on joining our upcoming via Ferrata event, express your interest by completing the following form. 👇
