Hiking is not just a walk in the woods; it's a journey of self-discovery and skill development. When you hit the trails, you embark on an adventure that helps you grow in various ways. At ARAO we use hiking as a non-formal learning method to acquire new competences:
Finding your way - Hiking teaches you to navigate using maps, compasses, or GPS. Every trail becomes an adventure where you’re the explorer.
Building endurance - Long hikes test your limits and build stamina. With every step, you grow stronger and prove to yourself that you can push through challenges.
Learning survival skills - Nature is unpredictable, and hiking helps you adapt. Along the way, you can pick up skills like finding water, setting up shelter, or even starting a fire.
Taking smart risks - Hiking sharpens your ability to assess and manage risks—whether it’s tricky terrain, changing weather, or wildlife. It’s about being adventurous, but also prepared.
Respecting nature - Spending time outdoors builds a deep respect for the environment. By following simple “leave no trace” principles, you help protect the places you explore.
Discovering wildlife - Every hike is a chance to spot plants and animals you’ve never seen before. It’s like being a detective in nature’s classroom.
First aid ready - Basic first aid skills are essential when you’re outdoors. Knowing how to react in case of an accident can make all the difference.
Building mental strength - Hiking challenges not just your body, but your mind too. It helps you stay focused, overcome obstacles, and keep going even on tough days.
Planning ahead - From choosing routes to packing gear and food, hiking teaches you how to prepare. Every trip becomes a project, and you’re the organizer.
Managing time - Reaching checkpoints and keeping pace with daylight helps you develop time management skills you can use every day.
Exploring cultures - Hiking can take you across regions and borders, where you discover new places, people, and traditions along the way.
Sharing stories - Many hikers love capturing their journeys through photos or journals. It’s a creative way to relive the adventure and inspire others.
Leading and teaming up - Whether guiding a group or joining one, hiking builds leadership and teamwork skills. You learn when to lead and when to support.
When you're out on the trail, remember that hiking isn't just about putting one foot in front of the other. It can be a transformative experience that shapes you into a more competent and capable individual. Each hike is a chapter in your adventure story, and you're the hero of your own tale.

The project focuses on sharing knowledge and skills related to the organization and leadership of hiking activities across all partner nations.
Starting from Balan, the hike is relatively brief, taking approximately two hours to complete, especially during the winter season. The frosty, chilly weather on the Saturday in January created ideal conditions for an outdoor adventure.
