Hiking is not just a walk in the woods; it's a journey of self-discovery and skill development. When you hit the trails, you embark on an adventure that helps you grow in various ways. At ARAO we use hiking as a non-formal learning method to acquire new competences:
Finding Your Way: Hiking forces you to become a navigator. You'll learn to read maps, use compasses, and sometimes rely on GPS devices to chart your course through the wilderness. It's like having your personal treasure map, and you're the explorer.
Endurance Boost: Long hikes challenge your physical limits, pushing you to build up stamina and strength. With every step, you're becoming physically stronger, proving to yourself that you can overcome obstacles.
Survival Instincts: Nature is unpredictable, and hiking teaches you to adapt. You'll pick up skills like finding water sources, building shelter, and even starting a fire. It's survival training, but in a real-life classroom.
Risk Taker with a Plan: Hiking hones your ability to assess and manage risks, making you a calculated risk-taker. You'll learn to evaluate terrain, weather, wildlife, and more. It's your adventure, and you're the director.
Eco Warrior: Hikers develop a deep respect for the environment. You become more aware of your ecological impact and can make a difference by practicing Leave No Trace principles. Mother Nature is your mentor, and you're her student.
Flora and Fauna Detective: With each hike, you'll discover new plants and animals. Identifying them adds a layer of excitement to your adventures. You're like a wildlife detective, and the forest is your mystery to solve.
First Aid Hero: Basic first aid skills become second nature. They're essential in remote areas where accidents can happen. You're the first responder, and your competence can save the day.
Mental Fortitude: Hiking can be mentally challenging. It's not just about your body; it's also about your mind. You'll develop the mental strength to overcome obstacles and push through the toughest of days.
Master Planner: Planning is part of the hiking adventure. You'll learn to map out routes, prepare gear, and organize supplies. It's your project, and you're the project manager.
Time Management Pro: Hiking involves setting goals to reach specific points on your journey. You'll get the hang of time management, ensuring you meet those milestones.
A Cultural Explorer: Hiking can take you to different regions and countries. As you immerse yourself in these diverse landscapes, you'll gain cultural competence and appreciation.
The Storyteller: Hikers often document their journeys through photography or storytelling. It's your chance to express your creative side, capturing the magic of the outdoors.
Leadership and Team Player: Organizing group hikes or participating in guided outings can sharpen your leadership and teamwork skills. It's a chance to lead or collaborate, and you're the team captain.
When you're out on the trail, remember that hiking isn't just about putting one foot in front of the other. It can be a transformative experience that shapes you into a more competent and capable individual. Each hike is a chapter in your adventure story, and you're the hero of your own tale.

ARAO collaborates as a partner in a project alongside organizations from Hungary, the Czech Republic, Portugal, and Slovakia, with the primary goal of promoting peer learning among hiking instructors from these five countries. The project focuses on sharing knowledge and skills related to the organization and leadership of hiking activities across all partner nations.
Commencing from Balan, the hike is relatively brief, taking approximately two hours to complete, especially during the winter season. The frosty, chilly weather on the Saturday in January created ideal conditions for an outdoor adventure.
